Lessons from the church of Antioch

Christianity’s Spread in Antioch
Max explored the spread of Christianity as described in the Book of Acts, focusing on the early church in Antioch. He explained how persecution in Jerusalem scattered Christians to regions like Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch. In this multicultural city, believers shared the gospel with diverse groups, including Greeks, demonstrating the universal scope of Christianity. Max stressed the importance of understanding the gospel in its entirety—not only the resurrection of Jesus but also humanity’s need for salvation due to sin entering the world. He emphasized that communicating the gospel requires sensitivity to differing belief systems.

Understanding God’s Perfect Standard and Grace
Max then turned to the concept of God’s perfect standard and how the law acts as a mirror revealing human sinfulness. He pointed out that keeping the law is impossible without the power of Jesus Christ. Max explained the difference between the letter of the law—strict adherence to rules—and the spirit of the law, which involves living in a way that pleases God.

Max warned about the eternal consequences of rejecting Jesus’ offer of grace, highlighting that it results in separation from God. He also spoke of the practical blessings of trusting in Jesus, which bring purpose and joy. Through Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, believers receive atonement and justification, offering them new life in Christ.

Max concluded by encouraging the congregation to renew their zeal for the gospel, accept the gift of grace, and boldly share Jesus in their daily lives. He prayed for renewed passion and courage to proclaim the gospel.
